Last night I went to go see the new Avengers movie (don't worry... no spoilers). In one scene, a female character is in distress and facing a cruel villain. In what is perhaps her darkest moment, the villain tells her that she will die alone. And then, from out of nowhere, a voice says, "She's not alone" and into the picture step two other female characters.
THIS is what a doula does. A doula steps into the picture and tells you and the villain trying to get you down (doubt and fear are two common villains in the labour room), that you aren't alone. You have another powerful woman beside you... someone else who knows this villain, but also knows you and the superpowers you possess within you. Someone who can bear witness to your vulnerable moment and help you harness that last bit of strength deep down in you. You are cared for and supported.. you are not alone.
